Window Technologies

This explores in detail how window systems affect the energy load of a home, and how to select windows to match the thermal and structural requirements of a given site. The course is intended to provide Specialists with the background knowledge necessary to understand the important role windows play in heat and moisture transfer in a home - a role that is inherently linked to the flashing systems we provide.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand how windows affect the energy load of a home.
  • Identify each part of a modern window unit, and explain the key properties that are used to measure window performance.
  • Clarify for builders and homeowners the simple but often misunderstood problem of condensation forming at the edges of the glazing.
  • Describe how low-emissivity coatings work and which types are best suited for a particular climate.
  • Identify the structural grade required for a particular window application.
  • Explain best practice for installing window and door units in their rough openings.
  • Troubleshoot common window problems.
