Building Envelope Physics

The Building Envelope

The building envelope (also referred to as the building enclosure) functions like the "skin" of a structure - protecting the building from the elements while retaining indoor temperature and humidity conditions. This lesson introduces the basic components of the building elements, and focuses on developing an understanding of the special demands on wall systems.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify the basic envelope systems
  • Describe the evolution of the building envelope
  • Explain the performance requirements on today's wall systems
  • Describe where wall systems are most vulnerable to climate conditions
