Building Envelope Physics

Water Movement

Moisture migration through building envelopes is inevitable. However, uncontrolled moisture can have a detrimental effect on building durability. This lesson explains the basic water transport mechanisms through the building envelope, and explores strategies for controlling them.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe the four ways liquid water can migrate through the envelope
  • Predict how rain loads will be distributed over a building
  • Describe two ways water vapor moves through walls, and evaluate their relative impacts
  • Review how water vapor diffusion is measured
  • Identify various water diffusion pathways
  • Explain moisture balance in buildings
