Walls must satisfy a number of design criteria; there is no single criterion by which to evaluate a wall assembly. These criteria often compete with each other in terms of determining the best functionality for the job.
Invariably, designers face challenges when deciding what type of wall system to use in order to meet their criteria, and in choosing the components that should be contained within that wall system. Depending on the building and its requirements, some criteria may be more important than others, but all must be considered during the design process.
