Glazing

This lesson introduces glazing, one of the five envelope systems studied in this course.

Glazing is a barrier system, used to provide the exterior finish in a commercial structure. It is often referred to as a curtain wall, but technically, glazing is a non-load-bearing assembly. While glazing systems have common fabrication and installation methods, the term "glazing" describes many types of materials. Besides glass curtain wall systems, other common exterior finish assemblies include metal, thin stone, and fiber reinforced plastics. Glazing is typically supported by steel, reinforced concrete, or aluminum superstructures or framing systems, which are independent of the glazing system.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Be familiar with typical applications of glazing assemblies
  • Know where designers use glazing and be familiar with the relative costs of this assembly
  • Be able to describe the typical components of a glazing system
  • Understand how glazing assemblies address design criteria such as loading requirements
  • Recognize best-practice applications and common problems associated with glazing systems.
