Stucco and EIFS Systems

This lesson covers two types of stucco assemblies: traditional cementitious stucco and synthetic stucco. Building designers typically use synthetic stucco as part of a system referred to as an "Exterior Insulation Finish System" or EIFS. They use both types of stucco assemblies with wood or steel framing, as well as with masonry or concrete structures.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Be familiar with typical applications of stucco and EIFS assemblies, understanding the criteria designers use to specify each for a particular application
  • Understand how the two products are similar, and be able to distinguish their differences
  • Know the full, installed costs of each system, and understand why the installed cost might vary across the country
  • Be able to describe the typical components of a stucco or EIFS system
  • Understand how these assemblies address design criteria, such as loading requirements
