Interface Systems

The term "interface" describes the point where one building system begins and another ends. All building envelopes contain a number of components and systems. Building designers must bring these systems together seamlessly and without fail. While the interface is not the only condition likely to fail, it is the one for which the designer is completely responsible. Therefore, this lesson helps Specialists understand typical interface conditions and their design challenges.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Understand the interface condition, and know why it is of concern to building designers
  • Be able to describe typical interface conditions, and know why they are required and how building designers address them within the envelope
  • Be familiar with the role of flashing and sealants
  • Recognize best-practice applications and common problems associated with interface conditions.
