HVAC System Overview

Heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems - the source of a home's heating, cooling and fresh air supply - directly affect the thermal and moisture performance of a home. This course provides an overview of the common types of residential HVAC systems and explores in depth the problems created when those systems are improperly sized and poorly installed. The course is intended to provide Specialists with the background knowledge they need to understand the critical role heating and cooling systems play in moving heat and moisture through a home.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Identify the components of common home heating and cooling systems
  • Summarize the problems associated with oversizing HVAC systems
  • Explain how pressure imbalances affect the flow of heat and moisture through building envelopes
  • Identify common ductwork materials and performance problems
  • Explain how duct leakage impacts back drafting, indoor air quality, and life safety.
  • Explain how air conditioners work
  • Describe the pros and cons of different ventilation systems
