HVAC System Overview

System Sizing

Accurately sizing a heating or cooling system to meet the specific energy demands of a particular home can be done only by following a careful analysis of the home's energy load. This lesson explains how failing to do this assessment reduces the system's efficiency, shortens the life of the equipment, and creates a range of uncomfortable conditions for the home's occupants.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify the problems associated with oversizing HVAC systems
  • Explain what short-cycling means and the problems it can cause
  • Describe why an energy-load calculation is needed for each installation
  • Review the essential measurements used to complete an energy-load calculation
